Minoxidil Induced Central Serous Chorioretinopathy Treated with Oral Eplerenone – A Case Report

TLDR Minoxidil can cause a rare eye condition, but it was successfully treated with oral Eplerenone in one case.
In 2020, Venkatesh et al. conducted a case study on a 41-year-old male who developed Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR), a rare side-effect, after using a 5% topical minoxidil solution twice daily for 10 months to treat androgenic alopecia. Despite discontinuing the minoxidil treatment for 2 months, the patient's symptoms persisted. The patient was then treated with 50 mg/day of oral eplerenone for 4 weeks, which led to the complete resolution of his symptoms and subretinal fluid (SRF). There was no recurrence of SRF two months after starting the therapy. The study concluded that oral eplerenone was safe and effective in this case, but further studies are needed before it can be routinely used in the population.
