TLDR Melatonin improved reproductive function in male Pomeranian dogs with Alopecia X, but more research is needed.
This study on 16 intact male Pomeranian dogs with Alopecia X examined the dose-response effects of oral melatonin on reproductive parameters. Over 45 days, melatonin at doses of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mg/kg showed dose-dependent improvements in semen quality, with the high-dose group (0.5 mg/kg) exhibiting significant increases in semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm count, and motility. The high-dose group had a mean semen volume of 6.05 mL compared to 4.35 mL in the control group, and significant improvements in sperm motility and total sperm count. Hormonal changes were modest and not statistically significant, suggesting melatonin's effects are primarily localized within the testes. The study indicates that higher doses of melatonin may enhance reproductive health in dogs with Alopecia X, though further research is needed to explore long-term effects.
