TLDR Melatonin improved reproductive function in male Pomeranian dogs with Alopecia X, but more research is needed.
This study examined the effects of oral melatonin on reproductive parameters in 16 intact male Pomeranian dogs with Alopecia X. The dogs were divided into four groups, including a control group and three treatment groups receiving varying doses of melatonin. Over 45 days, improvements in semen quality and testicular blood flow were observed, particularly in the highest dose group. However, a decrease in the testosterone-to-oestradiol ratio was noted, indicating a complex hormonal response. While melatonin showed potential in enhancing reproductive function, the study's short duration may not have captured the complete spermatogenesis cycle, and further research is needed to understand its long-term effects and optimize treatment.
