TLDR Melatonin affects skin cell growth differently based on how much and how long it's used.
In the 2003 study, researchers investigated the effects of melatonin on the proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes, a type of skin cell relevant to hair follicle growth. They employed various assays, including [3H]thymidine incorporation, Hoechst dye 33342 fluorescence, and ATP bioluminescence, to assess cell proliferation. The study aimed to identify appropriate concentrations of melatonin for skin treatments and to determine if melatonin had any cytotoxic effects on HaCaT cells. The results demonstrated that melatonin's influence on cell proliferation varied depending on its concentration and the duration of incubation.
