TLDR New treatments for hair loss show promise, but more development is needed, especially for tough cases.
The 2010 document reviewed the management of hair loss diseases, particularly focusing on alopecia areata (AA), androgenetic alopecia (AGA), and scarring alopecia. Improved diagnostic techniques, such as dry dermoscopy and scalp biopsy, have enhanced the understanding of these conditions. For AA, intraregional corticosteroids and contact immunotherapy were first-line treatments, with new therapies like pulse corticosteroid therapy showing a 59.4% response rate in recent-onset cases. Antihistamines were suggested for AA, especially in atopic patients. AGA treatments included finasteride and minoxidil, with dutasteride as a potential alternative. Nutritional deficiencies were linked to telogen effluvium, with supplementation aiding in recovery. Scarring alopecia treatment focused on early diagnosis and anti-inflammatory therapy, with hair transplantation for stable cases. The document emphasized the need for further treatment development, particularly for refractory cases, and the potential of regenerative medicine.
