TLDR Keratins 8 and 14 can help identify and diagnose benign skin tumors.
The study investigated the expression of keratins 8 and 14 in 42 benign skin appendage tumors using immunohistochemical methods. Keratin 14 was found in basal cells of the epidermis, outer root sheaths of hair follicles, and peripheral cells of sebaceous glands, among other locations. Keratin 8 was present in secretory cells of eccrine and apocrine sweat glands but not in myoepithelial or ductal cells. The staining patterns in tumors resembled those in normal tissues, suggesting that keratins 8 and 14 could aid in the recognition, classification, and diagnosis of skin appendage tumors.
