TLDR Seborrheic keratosis shows varied cell differentiation, and keratin analysis helps diagnose skin tumors.
The study investigated the histogenetic origins of seborrheic keratosis (SK) by examining keratin and filaggrin expression across its six histopathological types. It found that hyperkeratotic SK expressed K 1, K 10, and filaggrin, indicating differentiation towards squamoid terminal keratinization. In contrast, acanthotic, irritated, clonal, reticulated, and adenoid SK expressed K 14, suggesting differentiation towards basaloid undifferentiated cells. Acanthotic SK showed differentiation towards the hair bulge, while irritated SK differentiated towards the follicular infrainfundibulum. The study concluded that SK is in an undifferentiated and hyperproliferative state with diverse differentiation patterns, and that keratin expression analysis is useful for diagnosing cutaneous epithelial tumors.
