TLDR Teak leaf extract contains compounds that could help treat hair loss.
The study investigated Tectona grandis L.f. (teak) leaf extract as a potential treatment for hair loss. It focused on isolating and identifying 5α-reductase inhibitors, which prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a process involved in hair loss. Three terpenoid compounds were isolated, two of which showed potent 5α-reductase inhibitory activity. An HPLC method was developed for the quantitative determination of these inhibitors, which can be used for quality control of T. grandis leaf extracts. The ethanolic extract showed a significantly higher content of these inhibitors than the hexane extract, suggesting ethanol as a preferable extraction solvent. The study recommends 95% ethanol for extracting T. grandis leaves for use in hair-loss treatment products. The study also isolated and quantified 5α-reductase inhibitors from Tectona grandis leaf extract. The ethanolic extract showed higher contents of the inhibitors compared to the hexane extract. The study isolated and identified 5α-reductase inhibitors from the leaf extract of Tectona grandis (T. grandis), a tree species. The extraction of T. grandis leaves with 95% ethanol resulted in a higher volume of extract, which contained higher concentrations of the inhibitors and exhibited greater 5α-reductase inhibitory activity than the hexane extract.
