TLDR Inositol hexaphosphate helps protect hearing by preserving ear cells in mice.
The study investigates the protective effects of Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) on cochlear hair cells in mice, aiming to alleviate ototoxicity and age-related hearing loss. Using three different sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) mouse models, including those induced by cisplatin, aminoglycosides, and age-related hearing loss, the researchers administered IP6 either through injection or by adding it to drinking water. Results showed that IP6, particularly at a dose of 80 mg/kg, significantly reduced hearing threshold shifts and ameliorated the loss of outer hair cells across all models. These findings suggest that IP6 holds potential as an otoprotective agent for future clinical applications.
