TLDR Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix contains compounds that inhibit certain enzymes.
The study developed a method using ultrafiltration and HPLC to screen for enzyme inhibitors from Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix (PCR) extract, identifying seven potential bioactive components, including methylgallate and polydatin. The extract showed significant inhibitory activity on tyrosinase (TYR), xanthine oxidase (XOD), and α-glucosidase (α-GLU), with methylgallate and polydatin demonstrating varying degrees of inhibition. The PCR extract was particularly effective against α-GLU, surpassing acarbose, and showed comparable activity to arbutin on TYR, though less effective on XOD than allopurinol. Molecular docking confirmed strong binding interactions, supporting the potential therapeutic applications of these inhibitors for anti-diabetes, anti-gout, and skin-whitening properties.
