TLDR No treatment fully stops excessive hair growth in women, but various methods can help manage it effectively.
The document reviewed treatments for hirsutism, a condition of excessive hair growth in women, and concluded that while no treatment guarantees complete permanent hair removal, various options can manage the condition. Topical eflornithine and hand-held laser hair removal devices were noted for their effectiveness, particularly when used together. Oral antiandrogens, such as spironolactone, cyproterone acetate, finasteride, and oral contraceptives, were found to reduce excess hair by about one-third and are most effective when used long-term or in combination, with the choice often based on side effects and patient characteristics. Insulin sensitizers like metformin were deemed less beneficial. Despite the availability of these treatments, the permanent resolution of hirsutism remains elusive.
