TLDR Laser hair removal can be effective for darker skin but requires careful use to avoid side effects.
The chapter discussed the mechanisms of melanogenesis in skin and hair follicles, the thermal response of hair follicles to heat, and the importance of the Fitzpatrick scale in laser hair removal for darker skin types. It highlighted the efficacy and safety of various lasers and IPL systems, noting that while laser hair removal was initially developed for individuals with dark hair and fair skin, there was a growing demand to treat all skin types due to increasing ethnic diversity. Significant hair growth reduction was reported in darker skin types, but the interaction of lasers with skin melanin needed careful consideration to avoid adverse effects like pigmentation changes, skin texture alterations, atrophy, and scarring. Improved understanding of these responses aimed to minimize such side effects.
