TLDR Low ferritin and cobalamin levels are better indicators of chronic hair loss in reproductive-age women than hemoglobin levels.
The study "Hair loss from scalp among women: Does serum levels of iron, cobalamin and folic acid matter?" conducted by Sandhyalakshmi B N and Preetham Sharanappa in 2022, analyzed the deficiency status and correlation of hemoglobin, ferritin, cobalamin, and folic acid in 85 females of reproductive age experiencing hair loss. The results showed that 59.32% of the participants had anemia, 90% had lower than normal ferritin levels, and 50% had cobalamin deficiency. However, folate levels were mostly normal. The study concluded that ferritin and cobalamin levels were better indicators than hemoglobin levels alone in assessing chronic nonscarring hair loss from the scalp in females of reproductive age group.
