TLDR Chicken egg yolk peptides can promote hair growth by increasing a specific growth factor.
In the 2018 study by Nakamura et al., researchers found that water-soluble peptides from chicken egg yolk, named "hair growth peptide" (HGP), could stimulate hair growth by inducing Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) production. The study showed that HGP increased VEGF production, promoted human hair follicle dermal papilla cells proliferation, and enhanced hair growth in mouse models and 76 human subjects with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) over 24 weeks. The peptides activated VEGF expression through the insulin growth factor-1 receptor and the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 pathway. HGP was suggested as a safe alternative to minoxidil, without the associated side effects. The human clinical trial results were based on 35 subjects after excluding 2 for significant changes in hair growth rate and density.
