Assessment of Follicular Unit Density in Asian Men with Androgenetic Alopecia

Dell Kristie O. Castillejos, Damkerng Pathomvanich
TLDR Asian men have varying hair densities, important for hair transplant success.
The study assessed follicular unit density in 70 Asian men with androgenetic alopecia undergoing hair transplantation. It found that East and Southeast Asians had an average follicular unit density of 61.1 FU/cm², with 111.2 hairs/cm², predominantly consisting of 2-hair grafts (54.2%). West Asians had a slightly higher density of 63.6 FU/cm², with 126.8 hairs/cm², also mainly 2-hair grafts (59%), and the highest miniaturized hair density at 17.8 hairs/cm². South Asians showed similar density to West Asians at 63.5 FU/cm², with 126.8 hairs/cm², and a similar distribution of graft types. The study highlighted variations in donor density and hair characteristics among different Asian populations, which are crucial for successful hair transplantation outcomes.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Scalp tension from the occipitalis muscle is theorized to contribute to hair loss, but most believe DHT and genetics are the main causes. Treatments like finasteride and minoxidil are considered more effective than addressing scalp tension.

People discussing hair loss treatments emphasize the need for patience, as results from using finasteride and minoxidil can take 8-12 months or longer. Some users report early signs of improvement, while others experience continued shedding or slower progress.
