TLDR Finasteride effectively treats male pattern baldness.
Finasteride was proven effective in treating male androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a hereditary form of baldness characterized by distinctive patterns and linked to serum androgen levels, particularly 5-?-dehydrotestosterone (DHT). As a 4-azasteroid, finasteride acted as a competitive and specific inhibitor of the enzyme 5-?-reductase type II, which converts testosterone into DHT. By inhibiting this enzyme, finasteride significantly decreased serum and tissue DHT concentrations. A daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride was shown to effectively treat AGA in men.
