TLDR A genetic variant in goats is linked to cashmere growth.
The study involved whole-genome sequencing of 115 domestic goats from China, Nepal, and Pakistan, including 51 cashmere goats and 64 non-cashmere goats, to investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying cashmere fiber growth. Researchers identified a 505-bp indel variant at the FGF5 gene locus, which was strongly associated with cashmere growth. This variant appeared to act as an enhancer for transcription factor binding, leading to increased transcription of the FGF5 gene in non-cashmere goats. The findings suggested that this indel mutation could serve as a molecular marker for cashmere growth, aiding in the sustainable utilization and conservation of goat genetic resources.
