TLDR Researchers found a genetic region that influences the number of coat layers in dogs.
Researchers identified a genetic locus on chromosome 28 associated with the number of coat layers in domestic dogs using SNP array and whole genome sequence data. They found an 18.4 kilobase region with 62 significant variants within a long noncoding RNA upstream of the ADRB1 gene, suggesting it acts as a cis-regulatory module. Two variants, common in single-coated dogs but rare in wolves, were predicted to affect transcription factor binding. This study was one of the first to use WGS data for GWAS and variant mapping to identify traits defining dog breeds.
