Pretreatment With Epidermal Growth Factor Promotes Primary Hair Recovery in Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia

TLDR Epidermal growth factor helps hair regrow after chemotherapy.
The study investigated the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) pretreatment on hair recovery in chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) using a C57BL/6 mouse model. EGF, known for its cell growth stimulation and catagen-inducing effects, was applied topically to hair follicles before chemotherapy. The study found that EGF induced a catagen-like stage in anagen hair follicles, which protected them from chemotherapy damage. EGF treatment promoted primary hair recovery through the dystrophic anagen pathway, suggesting that catagen inducers like EGF could serve as a protective strategy against CIA by favoring primary recovery over secondary recovery pathways.
