TLDR Researchers developed a quick and sensitive method to identify and measure hair growth-promoting substances in a herbal mix.
In 2015, researchers developed a rapid and sensitive UPLC-ESI-MS/MS method for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of bioactive substances in a medicinal herbal complex extract (MHCE), which was composed of 23 herbs traditionally used in oriental medicine to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. The method utilized a reversed-phase C18 column and gradient elution for chromatographic analysis, with mass spectrometry conducted in the positive ESI mode. The detection of bioactive compounds was achieved through selected reaction monitoring (SRM). The method demonstrated high linearity (r2 > 0.9964) for the calibration curves of reference compounds, and the limits of detection and quantification were notably low at 0.02 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively.
