TLDR Acanthus ebracteatus extract may help prevent hair loss.
The study investigated the effects of ten ethanolic extracts from various medicinal plants on dermal papilla cells to identify potential anti-hair loss treatments. Among the extracts tested, Acanthus ebracteatus (A. ebracteatus) was found to promote dermal papilla cell proliferation and affect the S and G2/M phases of the cell cycle. Additionally, A. ebracteatus exhibited inhibitory activity against 5α-reductase and testosterone, reducing cell viability in dermal papilla cells. It also significantly inhibited LPS-stimulated IL-1β production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggest that the ethanolic extract of A. ebracteatus is a promising candidate for anti-hair loss treatment.

He Shou Wu (Fo Ti) extract was found to prolong the hair growth phase, inhibit 5-alpha-reductase (like finasteride), reduce androgen receptors, and increase growth factors, potentially outperforming minoxidil in recovering hair follicle size after DHT exposure. Two compounds, emodin and TSG, are identified as responsible for these effects and warrant further investigation.
