TLDR Finasteride and dutasteride effectively stop or reverse hair loss in women with androgenetic alopecia, with dutasteride being more effective for women under 50.
The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of finasteride and dutasteride on hair loss in women with androgenetic alopecia over a period of 3 years. The study found that both drugs were able to stop or reverse hair loss in women with androgenetic alopecia, with hair thickness increasing significantly in both age categories and at all sites of the scalp. Dutasteride was found to be more effective than finasteride in women under 50 years of age when measured at the center of the midline and the vertex. The study recommends that both drugs be prescribed only to women who cannot or do not want to become pregnant any more.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

A user who has been taking finasteride, minoxidil, and microneedling for one year with no results, and the replies discuss other treatments, including dutasteride, which is feared due to potential side effects.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
