TLDR An oil-in-water emulsion with CBD and ginger root extract significantly improved symptoms of dry and eczema-prone skin.
The document presents a study that tested the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities of 24 plant extracts, with Cannabidiol (CBD) and Zingiber officinale (ginger) root extract showing exceptional activity. These two were further tested and found to suppress NF-κB activation, cytokine/chemokine secretion, and transcription of cytokines, chemokines, and cytokine receptors in keratinocytes. The combination of CBD and ginger root extract enhanced these anti-inflammatory effects and increased the release of N-acyl-ethanolamine-type endocannabinoids (ECs), which are relevant for inflammation and pruritus effects. An oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion containing CBD and ginger root extract was developed and tested in a clinical study with 44 subjects with a history of atopic eczema and an itching score of at least 1. After 5 days of product application, there was a statistically significant reduction in erythema, skin dryness, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and a significant increase in skin moisture. The itchiness also decreased significantly, with a notable reduction by day 2. The product was well tolerated by the subjects.
