Chemokines are a family of small signaling proteins that play a crucial role in the immune system by directing the movement of immune cells to sites of inflammation or injury. In the context of hair loss, chemokines can influence hair follicle biology by modulating inflammatory responses and affecting the hair growth cycle. Certain chemokines have been implicated in conditions such as alopecia areata, where immune-mediated attacks on hair follicles lead to hair loss. Their distinguishing characteristic is their ability to bind to specific receptors on target cells, guiding cellular migration and activation.
