TLDR A new method using solid-state circular dichroism anisotropy can distinguish similar chiral compounds better than traditional techniques.
This study explores the limitations of conventional electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy in distinguishing chiral compounds with similar spectra and introduces a novel approach using solid-state circular dichroism anisotropy (CDA) to overcome this challenge. The research demonstrates that CDA can reveal critical differences between two polymorphs of finasteride, which have nearly identical ECD spectra. By employing ECD imaging and TDDFT-simulated spectra from X-ray structures, the study identifies a unique CDA signature in the second polymorphic form, distinguishing it from the first. This proof-of-concept suggests a new strategy for differentiating chiral solid-state systems that conventional methods may not effectively resolve.
