TLDR De-epithelialization reduces complications in subcutaneous skin flap procedures.
This study on de-epithelialization in subcutaneous skin flap transposition using 12 rats found that de-epithelialized flaps significantly reduced complications such as cyst formation and hair growth under the skin compared to non-de-epithelialized flaps. Molecular analysis showed decreased keratin 5 expression, indicating reduced epidermal differentiation. The study concludes that de-epithelialization is beneficial in preventing complications when transposing skin flaps subcutaneously, highlighting its importance in minimizing risks in clinical applications. Further research is needed to optimize techniques and understand the mechanisms of hair follicle suppression in subcutaneous environments.
