TLDR Permanent hair dyes use chemicals that react with hydrogen peroxide to create color.
Hair dyes, used since ancient times, are categorized into temporary and permanent types based on their longevity and chemical composition. Permanent dyes, known as oxidative hair dyes, involve non-colored chemicals that oxidize to produce color. These dyes contain precursor and coupler parts that form the dye molecule when combined with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium. This review discusses the formulations, mechanisms, and potential for repairing damaged hair and new applications.
