TLDR Oxidative dyes damage hair more than semi-permanent dyes, but new technologies help protect hair while coloring.
The study explores the chemical processes involved in hair dyeing, focusing on how oxidative and non-oxidative dyes affect hair structure. It highlights that oxidative dyes, which use hydrogen peroxide and alkalising agents, modify keratin, lift the cuticle, and increase hair porosity, leading to structural changes. In contrast, semi-permanent and direct dyes cause less disruption. The research also discusses new technologies like bond-repair additives and ammonia-free systems that aim to maintain hair integrity while achieving desired color results. These findings offer a biochemical basis for balancing aesthetic outcomes with hair health.
