TLDR Taking finasteride before surgery reduces blood loss in prostate procedures.
The study conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Teaching Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, compared intraoperative blood loss in 60 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) undergoing bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), with half receiving preoperative finasteride and half not. Results showed that the group treated with finasteride experienced significantly less blood loss (median 0.4 g/dL) compared to the control group (median 1.3 g/dL), with a p-value of < 0.001. Although the need for blood transfusion was not significantly different between the groups, the finasteride group had a shorter median hospital stay. The study concluded that a 14-day preoperative finasteride regimen effectively reduces blood loss during bipolar TURP, suggesting its use to minimize complications in BPH surgeries.
