The study evaluated the effect of finasteride pretreatment on blood loss during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in 211 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Patients were divided into three groups: a long-term group treated with finasteride for at least 3 months, a short-term group treated for 5-7 days, and a control group with no pretreatment. Results showed that the long-term finasteride group experienced significantly less intraoperative and postoperative blood loss compared to the control group, and the surgical field was more satisfactory. No significant differences were observed between the short-term and control groups, except for postoperative bladder infusion. The study concluded that a minimum 3-month course of finasteride pretreatment is recommended to reduce blood loss in patients undergoing TURP for larger prostates.
