TLDR Finasteride reduces bleeding during prostate surgery.
The meta-analysis evaluated the effect of preoperative finasteride on reducing blood loss during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and explored its mechanisms. It included 13 trials with 1,050 patients and found that those who received finasteride had significantly less total blood loss and bleeding per gram of resected prostate tissue compared to the control group (P<0.01). Additionally, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) were lower in the finasteride group (P<0.01). The study concluded that finasteride could decrease bleeding during TURP, potentially by reducing VEGF and MVD expression.
