TLDR Taking finasteride for over a month before surgery reduces blood loss during TURP.
The study investigated the effects of preoperative finasteride and tamsulosin on reducing bleeding during TURP in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. In a randomized controlled trial with 96 patients, four groups were compared: finasteride for over three months, finasteride for one month, finasteride and tamsulosin for three months, and a control group with no medication. Results showed no significant difference in bleeding between the three-month and one-month finasteride groups, but a significant difference in prostate microvascular density (MVD). Compared to the combination treatment group, both finasteride groups had significantly reduced blood loss and MVD. The study concluded that finasteride administration for more than one month before surgery effectively decreased blood loss during TURP.
