The study demonstrated that the water extract of Eclipta prostrata L. (WEP) exhibited potent antioxidative properties, effectively scavenging DPPH and superoxide radicals, and chelating ferrous ions with specific IC 50 values. The extract contained a high total phenol content and chlorogenic acid, which contributed to its antioxidative activity. WEP was found to absorb UVA and UVB radiation and provided dose-dependent protection to HaCaT human keratinocytes and mouse fibroblasts 3T3 cells against UVB-induced cytotoxicity. This protective effect was likely due to a synergistic interaction between chlorogenic acid and other active components in the extract.
