TLDR Chitosan-based dressings reduce inflammation and speed up skin wound healing.
This systematic review evaluated the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of chitosan (CS)-based wound therapy in skin healing. After screening 234 studies, 14 met the criteria, including one clinical trial on diabetic foot ulcers. The studies showed that CS decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, shortened the inflammatory phase, and accelerated wound closure. CS, especially when combined with other products, enhances the healing process by regulating inflammation and cellular activity. Despite limited clinical trials, CS-based dressings are promising for patients with comorbidities like diabetes, improving wound healing and patient outcomes.
