TLDR Camellia japonica fruit shell extract may help reduce hair loss by promoting hair cell growth and reducing stress effects.
The study assessed the anti-hair loss potential of Camellia japonica fruit shell extract (CJFSE) in vitro, focusing on its effects on hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs). CJFSE was found to increase the proliferation and spheroid size of HFDPCs and upregulate expression levels of VEGF-A, Wnt-1, c-Myc, and Cyclin D1. It also suppressed 5α-reductase activity and mitigated DHT-induced decreases in cell proliferation, Dkk-1 secretion, and β-gal activity. Additionally, CJFSE demonstrated DPPH scavenging activity and reduced hydrogen peroxide-induced ROS production. The presence of gallic acid and protocatechuic acid in CJFSE was confirmed through HPLC analysis. These findings suggest that CJFSE has the potential to alleviate hair loss by promoting hair cell growth and counteracting the effects of DHT and oxidative stress.
