TLDR The study suggests a possible increase in androgen receptors in patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia, but more research is needed.
This study examined androgen, estrogen, and progesterone receptor expression in hair follicle cells of 27 patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) and 26 healthy controls. Results indicated that 48% of FFA patients had androgen receptors in their scalp samples compared to 27% of controls, but this difference was not statistically significant. Estrogen and progesterone receptors were negative in all samples. The study suggests a trend towards higher androgen receptor expression in FFA patients, but larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and investigate the correlation with antiandrogen treatment response.
