TLDR α-Ketoglutaric acid improves hair growth, rabbit performance, and antioxidant levels.
The study on 160 Rex rabbits examined the effects of α-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) supplementation on hair follicle development, performance, and antioxidant capacity. AKG improved hair follicle density and activated the Wnt signaling pathway, crucial for hair growth. It enhanced dermal papilla cell proliferation and modulated pathways like TGF-β/BMP/Smad, promoting hair follicle transition to the growth phase. Performance metrics such as average daily gain and feed conversion rate improved, alongside increased antioxidant levels and reduced oxidative stress. The study suggests AKG's potential as a dietary supplement to enhance fur quality and overall rabbit performance, despite some limitations in pathway validation and longitudinal data.
