TLDR Alfatradiol (0.025%) is an effective and safe treatment for hair loss in both women and men.
In a 2005 study, 233 patients with androgenetic alopecia were treated with Alfatradiol (0.025%) over 7.5 months, showing significant improvements in hair growth. Specifically, women saw an increase in anagen hair from 69% to 77%, and men from 56% to 65%. Over 80% of patients experienced stabilization or improvement in hair growth, with women more likely to rate the treatment as successful compared to men. The treatment was well-tolerated, with only 1.3% of patients reporting mild local adverse reactions. Although the study had a higher proportion of female participants, Alfatradiol was concluded to be an effective and safe treatment for AGA in both sexes, with its mechanism of action potentially involving 5α-reductase inhibition or aromatase activation.
