TLDR Alcohol may slightly increase the risk of hair loss, but the link is uncertain.
This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the relationship between alcohol consumption and androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study analyzed data from multiple databases, focusing on clinically diagnosed AGA cases and categorizing alcohol consumption. The results showed that individuals who consume alcohol have an odds ratio (OR) of 1.40 for developing AGA compared to non-drinkers, although the confidence interval (CI) ranged from 0.95 to 2.06, indicating uncertainty. Subgroup analyses revealed an OR of 1.31 for men and higher ORs for cross-sectional (1.93) and case-control studies (1.69). The findings suggest that alcohol's impact on AGA may be less significant than previously thought, highlighting the need for future large-scale cohort studies with standardized diagnostic criteria.
