TLDR Adult acne is often related to hormonal disorders, especially in women, and may need long-term treatment involving specialists.
Acne tarda, acne that develops or continues after 25 years of age, is more common in women and is often linked to endocrinological disorders such as hyperandrogenism, hyperandrogenemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome, and late-onset adrenogenital syndrome. A study of 835 women with late-onset acne found hyperandrogenemia in 56.5% of the women. Treatment is similar to that of acne in adolescence, but may require long-term treatment over years or decades. An interdisciplinary approach involving gynecologists and endocrinologists is crucial in the diagnostic evaluation and therapy of patients with acne tarda.
