TLDR A 5-mg dose of oral minoxidil slightly lowers blood pressure temporarily, especially in those with higher initial blood pressure.
This study evaluated the cardiovascular effects of a 5-mg dose of oral minoxidil in 10 men with androgenetic alopecia using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Measurements were taken at baseline and after the first dose. Results showed no statistically significant differences in mean systolic blood pressure (mSBP), mean diastolic blood pressure (mDBP), and mean heart rate (mHR) over 24 hours. However, a nonsignificant reduction in mSBP and mDBP was observed within the first 2 hours post-intake, which normalized after 4 hours. Patients with higher baseline systolic blood pressure (>130 mmHg) experienced a greater reduction in BP. One patient reported lightheadedness, which resolved spontaneously. The study concludes that 5-mg minoxidil causes a slight, transient reduction in BP, particularly in patients with higher baseline BP, and suggests ABPM for patients with a history of postural hypotension before starting treatment.
