Pigment casts are cylindrical structures found in hair follicles that contain melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. They can be observed under a microscope and are often associated with certain hair disorders, such as trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) or alopecia areata, where they indicate abnormal hair growth or damage.
