small clusters of immune cells forming to isolate foreign substances

Granulomas are small areas of inflammation caused by the immune system's attempt to isolate substances it perceives as foreign but cannot eliminate. They often form in response to infections, such as tuberculosis, or inflammatory conditions, like sarcoidosis, and are characterized by a collection of immune cells, primarily macrophages, that transform into a more specialized form called epithelioid cells.
