    GlossaryPro-inflammatory cytokines

signaling molecules that trigger inflammation in the body

Pro-inflammatory cytokines are signaling molecules released by immune cells that promote inflammation in the body. They play a crucial role in the immune response by helping to fight off infections and heal injuries, but excessive or chronic production can lead to inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and alopecia areata. Examples include tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 (IL-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6).
