April 2019 in “npj Regenerative Medicine” The study systematically compared the angiogenic potential of human mesenchymal stromal cell (hMSC) secretomes from adipose tissue, bone marrow, and umbilical cord Wharton's jelly. It found that secretomes from Wharton's jelly (hWJSC) had the highest concentrations of angiogenesis-related proteins and were most effective in promoting angiogenesis, as demonstrated by enhanced monocyte migration, macrophage differentiation, and vascularization in mice. In contrast, adipose tissue-derived secretomes (hADSC) had lower levels of these proteins and lacked key angiogenic proteins. The study involved 5 donors per cell source and suggested that hWJSC secretomes could be a promising candidate for clinical applications in angiogenesis-related therapies due to their potent pro-angiogenic properties and noninvasive harvest.
