TLDR Low intensity ultrasound may reduce side effects of chemotherapy drugs like paclitaxel.
The document reviewed a laboratory discovery that low intensity ultrasound could serve as an antidote to the cytotoxic side effects of taxane drugs, such as paclitaxel, which are used in chemotherapy for major cancers. Taxanes, while effective, cause significant side effects like peripheral neuropathy and alopecia due to their impact on microtubules. The study found that brief exposure to low density ultrasound waves could eliminate paclitaxel cytotoxicity in cell cultures by breaking microtubule filaments, which were then disposed of in lysosomes. This suggests that ultrasound could potentially mitigate side effects like peripheral neuropathy and alopecia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
