TLDR Certain gene variants are linked to severe acne, especially in males.
This study investigated the association of androgen-related genes CYP21A2 and CYP19A1 with severe acne vulgaris in 600 patients and 652 healthy controls of Han Chinese descent from Yunnan, China. The research found significant associations between severe acne and two SNPs of the CYP21A2 gene, rs6474 and rs6465, particularly in male patients. Additionally, significant associations were observed for CYP19A1 variants rs8023263 and rs2470152 in males. Haplotype analysis indicated a significant association of CYP21A2 haplotypes with male patients, while no such association was found for CYP19A1 haplotypes. The study highlighted the potential role of these genes in severe acne, especially in males, suggesting the need for further research with diverse datasets to identify causal variants.
