TLDR Twisting hair weakens it, but strength can be recovered at low twist levels.
The study "Tensile properties of twisted hair fibers" found that twisting hair decreased its strength, extension, and initial modulus when extended to break without untwisting, but these properties were recoverable at low and moderate twist levels. Additionally, various hair care products were discussed: antioxidants in sun care formulations slightly increased peak temperature but reduced tensile strength; silicones in hair dyes reduced color fading; a new emollient enhanced hair shine; arginine in hair coloring reduced oxidative damage and improved tensile strength; the Bradford assay was better for quantifying hair protein loss; polymethylene wax in hair relaxers improved hair condition; new cationic cellulosic polymers in shampoos showed superior conditioning; and an enhanced delivery system for Octopirox® improved anti-dandruff efficacy.
