Studysummary This meta-analysis found that a combination of clobetasol, hydroxychloroquine, and N-acetylcysteine may be the most effective treatment approach for lichen planopilaris compared to other therapies. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
This systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis evaluated medical therapies for lichen planopilaris (LPP), a chronic disorder causing scarring alopecia. Seven studies with 251 patients were analyzed. The combination of clobetasol with N-acetylcysteine or pentoxyfilline showed significantly better outcomes in reducing LPP activity index compared to clobetasol alone. Conversely, cyclosporine, methotrexate, and methotrexate plus prednisolone were less effective than hydroxychloroquine. The study suggests a triple therapy of topical clobetasol, hydroxychloroquine, and N-acetylcysteine as the most effective treatment, while advising against less effective options like pioglitazone, mycophenolate mofetil, and cyclosporine for non-responders.
