TLDR Human scalp hair follicles grow well in Williams E medium, which may help with hair transplants.
The study conducted in 2013 observed the structure and regenerative ability of human scalp hair follicles when cultured in Williams E medium. The research involved 15 human scalp tissues and 150 scalp hair follicles. The scalp contained a large number of hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. The hair follicles had abundant epithelial cells with a low degree of differentiation. The fastest growth rate was observed within the first 5 days of culturing. The serum-free Williams E medium was found to be more conducive to hair follicle culture than other mediums, providing better in vitro regenerative ability. This could potentially create favorable conditions for delayed hair transplant surgery.
