TLDR Oxidative stress causes hair graying by damaging hair follicle melanocytes more than skin melanocytes.
The study explored the impact of aging on melanocyte behavior in hair follicles and epidermis, focusing on oxidative stress and its role in hair graying. It found that hair follicle melanocytes (HFMs) were more susceptible to aging than epidermal melanocytes (EMs), with a significant reduction in catalase expression and activity in older donors, leading to increased oxidative stress. This oxidative stress, exacerbated by reduced catalase, was linked to the loss of hair pigment and the increase in white hairs. The study highlighted the importance of catalase in protecting melanocytes from aging-related oxidative damage, suggesting that oxidative stress is a major factor in hair graying.

The conversation discusses GT20029, a drug in Phase II trials that targets androgen receptors with minimal systemic effects, and TDM-105795, a growth stimulant with a different mechanism than minoxidil that may revive papilla stem cells. Both are potential new treatments for hair loss.

community Please explain this Minoxidil phenomena

in Minoxidil  58 upvotes 2 years ago
The post discusses the difference in effects of Minoxidil (Min) on scalp and facial hair. The user questions why Min-induced hair growth on the scalp is temporary, while facial hair growth seems permanent, even after stopping Min. They propose theories, including different Min mechanisms on body and facial hair, the role of DHT, and the possibility of not achieving fully terminal hair. The responses include personal experiences and theories about Min's effects on hair growth.
